A Guide to Towbar Electrics: Finding the Right Fit for Your Vehicle
Modern vehicles are more advanced than ever, which means choosing the right towbar electrics is an important step. Whether you are attaching a simple cycle carrier or towing a large family caravan, we want to make sure you get exactly what you need.
To help you decide, your choice comes down to two main things: The Socket (what you plug into) and The Wiring (how it connects to your car's brain). Here is a simple breakdown of your options.
Step 1: Which Socket Type Do I Need?
The socket is the physical connection visible on the back of your car. Your choice depends entirely on what you plan to tow.
7-Pin Electrics (Standard)
This is the standard installation for basic towing. A 7-pin socket provides power to the essential, legally required road lights on your trailer, cycle carrier, or horsebox—such as the brake lights, indicators, sidelights, and fog lights.
- Best for: Standard trailers, cycle racks, and light towing.
- Note: It will not power reverse lights, but this isn't a legal requirement for most standard trailers. Even if you are only using a cycle carrier, you still need these electrics to power a light board, as your bikes will likely block your car's rear lights.
Twin Electrics (7-Pin + 12S)
If you are towing a caravan built before 2008, it will likely have two separate plugs. Twin electrics provide the standard 7-pin connection for your road lights, plus a secondary "12S" socket.
- Best for: Older caravans (pre-2008).
- What the extra socket does: It provides power to the caravan’s reverse lights and supplies a 12-volt feed to charge the caravan battery, run the fridge, and power interior lights while you drive.
13-Pin Electrics (The Modern Standard)
If you are towing a caravan built from 2008 onwards, this is what you need. The 13-pin socket neatly combines all the functions of the old twin electrics into one single, easy-to-use plug.
- Best for: Modern caravans, larger trailers with reverse lights, or ALKO-ATC stability systems.
- Why choose it? It is a much neater installation than twin sockets and often folds away discreetly behind the bumper when not in use. If you have a 13-pin socket on your car but want to tow a standard 7-pin trailer, you can easily use a simple plug-in adaptor.
Step 2: Which Wiring Kit Should I Choose?
While the socket sits on the outside, the wiring kit is hidden inside your vehicle. This is how the towbar talks to your car.
Universal Aftermarket Wiring
Universal wiring uses an independent bypass relay to power your towing lights without directly interfering with your car's complex computer network.
- How it works: It effectively "listens" for when you use your brakes or indicators and sends a matching signal to the trailer. Because it is separate, the car doesn't technically know the towbar is there, avoiding any dashboard warning lights.
- Best for: Older vehicles that are out of their manufacturer warranty. It is a safe, cost-effective solution for cars without advanced built-in towing safety features.
Vehicle-Specific Wiring Kits (VSK)
These kits are engineered specifically for the exact make and model of your car. Instead of bypassing the car's computers, a VSK plugs directly into the systems exactly as the manufacturer intended.
- Best for: Newer vehicles, cars still under manufacturer warranty, and cars with advanced safety features.
- The Benefits: Because the car "knows" it is towing, it can activate safety features like Trailer Stability Control, adjust parking sensors, and alter suspension settings automatically.
- Our Recommendation: If your car is still under the manufacturer's warranty, we strongly recommend a Vehicle-Specific Kit to ensure that your warranty remains fully intact. In fact, due to the complex electronics of modern cars, there are some newer vehicles where we only offer our fitting service if a Vehicle-Specific Kit is used.
What About "Coding"?
You might have heard that modern cars need "coding" when a towbar is fitted. Coding is simply a software update that tells your car's computer network that a Vehicle-Specific Kit has been installed, fully unlocking all the dedicated towing features (like altering the parking sensors or stability control).
There is no need to worry about taking your car to a main dealership to get this done. Our comprehensive fitting service includes any necessary coding. Our expert fitters handle the entire process from start to finish, so your car is ready to safely tow the moment we hand back the keys.
